Kenyan trumpeter Christine Kamau to tour Switzerland in April
Kenyan trumpeter Christine Kamau is set to travel to Switzerland in April for a monthlong research trip to explore the jazz music scene in the European country.
The trip will see Kamau visit jazz clubs, festivals and institutions in various Swiss cities including Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Lucerne and Bern to initiate connections with Swiss musicians for future collaborations. The trip is funded by the Swiss Arts Council, Pro Helvetia.
“I have always been keen on collaborations and this trip presents an excellent opportunity to create meaningful connections with Swiss jazz music industry practitioners in order to lay the foundation for a long-term intercultural musical partnership,” Kamau said.
Kamau’s compositions have been described as “a wide-eared approach to jazz, paying attention to various styles without losing the jazz tonality.” She has performed in many countries including Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania, among others.
Her much-anticipated sophomore album But I’ll Try will be released later this year.
Kamau is also the founder of the Women in Music Concert Series, a live-performance platform that promotes women musicians by providing showcase opportunities to stage their performance skills in Kenya.
