SA: Zakes Bantwini to celebrate 20 years in music with concert
South African artist Zakes Bantwini will celebrate 20 years in the music industry with an anniversary concert at the Durban International Convention Centre on 5 July.
The concert will be hosted by local creatives Nandi Madida, TBO Touch, Boity, Minnie Dlamini, Kwenzo Ngcobo, Heazy, Robot Boii and Mpho Popps. According to the organisers, the show is designed to celebrate Zakes Bantwini’s musical journey and achievements and music lovers can look forward to a spectacular show featuring performances of his greatest hits and special guest appearances from fellow renowned artists.
Confirmed artists include Zakes Bantwini, Kelvin Momo, Mi Casa, Sjava, Young Stunna, Major League DJz, Sun EL Musician, Drega, Stanky and Joyous Celebration.
“Collaboration has always been at the heart of my success,” Zakes Bantwini said. “Working with talented artists and creating music that resonates on a global scale has been incredibly fulfilling. As I look back on the past 20 years, I’m proud of what we’ve achieved and excited for what the future holds.”
Born in 1980, Zakes Bantwini embarked on his remarkable music journey in 2004 while studying at Durban University of Technology. He founded Mayonie Productions that paved his way for an illustrious career as one of South Africa’s most influential music figures. His distinctive sound has propelled him to the forefront of Southern African house music, with acclaimed albums like Love, Light, and Music (2013), Love, Light, and Music 2 (2017), Ghetto King (2021), and The Star Is Reborn (2023).
Zakes Bantwini’s achievements include a 2023 Grammy Award for Best Global Music Performance for ‘Bayethe’ (2023) alongside Nomcebo Zikode and Wouter Kellerman, Best Dance Album at the 2010 Metro FM Music Awards, Best Male Artist at the 2011 South African Music Awards and GQ Men of the Year Award for Musician of the Year in 2022.
