Zim: Mary Anibal shares debut album Maria Wenyu
Zimbabwean Afro-fusion music sensation Mary Anibal has released her 10-track debut album titled Maria Wenyu.
The album, which is available for streaming and download on major digital platforms, showcases her extraordinary talent and unique fusion of soulful melodies with a fresh, new wave sound. It is a celebration of Zimbabwean music featuring a star-studded line-up of legendary producers and instrumentalists.
Produced by iconic figures in the Zimbabwean music industry, including Keith Farquharson, Trust Samende, and Daniel Chiweddar, the album promises both authenticity and innovation. It also features a special collaboration with Zimbabwean artist Jah Prayzah on a song titled ‘Yeuka’.
Anibal’s journey to this debut album has been remarkable, having won the Zimbabwe Music Awards and serving as an EU Ambassador for Green and Gender Equality. She has continuously used her platform to advocate for social change while captivating audiences with her soulful voice and musical talent.
Born in Harare, Anibal was surrounded by music from a young age and began performing at age six. She started her professional career in 2016 as a session musician, working with prominent artists such as Jah Prayzah and Josh Meck. Her music reflects her cultural heritage and often incorporates elements of surrealism and folk art.
She has performed at numerous festivals, including the Harare International Festival of the Arts and the Imagine Music Experience in the Netherlands, where she won an international music competition with her ensemble Wenyombwe. In 2020, Anibal launched her solo career with the release of her debut single ‘Bhonzo Muderere’ and has since released several successful singles.
Aside from making music, Anibal is also a music teacher, having taught at several institutions, including the Music Crossroads Academy and Eaglesvale Senior School. Her vision is to build on the legacy of Zimbabwean music legends and inspire hope through her music. With her determination and talent, Anibal is set to become one of the most important artists of her generation.
