Jah Prayzah
Bio
Mukudzeyi Mukombe was born on 4 July 1987 in Nyadire. A popular singer in church, as a teenager he loved playing mbira, singing and writing. He read hundreds of Shona novels, grooming his vernacular poetic skills. He started his music career in 2001, while he was still at school, although it was not until 2007 that he released his debut album, ‘Rudo Nerunyararo’. It was followed in 2009 by ‘Sungano yeRudo’, his first commercial success. It included the hit 'Sungano', his breakthrough hit. Many fans at the time knew him simply as the 'Sungano Guy', rather than Jah Prayzah. The album caught the attention of one of Zimbabwe’s biggest music promoters, Patson 'Chipaz' Chimbodza, who began to promote the youngster and hire him for his events.
Fusing reggae with jiti and other traditional Zimbabwean genres, Jah Prayzah followed this album with ‘Ngwarira Kuparara’ in 2011. In 2013 he released his fourth album, 'Tsviriyo', another commercial success, with hits such as 'Mwanasikana', 'Ngoda', 'Machembere', 'Tsamba' and the title track. The album earned numerous accolades and established Jay Prayzah as one of Zimbabwe's brightest young stars. Wearing his signature military uniform and backed by his band the 3rd Generation, he's a hugely popular live performer at home and in South Africa.
