Uganda: Bebe Cool releases new single ahead of upcoming album

The track, now available for streaming and download, marks a shift in his musical style, embracing Afrobeats influences rather than his traditional reggae and dancehall sound.

Produced by Ugandan duo Bushington (George Kagoda) and Melanin Boy, ‘Motivation’ blends mellow Afrobeats rhythms with heartfelt lyrics about love, inspiration, and devotion. The song’s smooth, minimalistic production highlights Bebe Cool’s signature husky vocals, complemented by an infectious melody that lingers long after it ends.

His latest album, Break the Chains, set for release sometime this year, is expected to push the boundaries of African music. Following the success of ‘Circumference’, the album’s first single, Bebe Cool expressed excitement about the project, stating: “I can’t wait for everyone to experience the full spectrum of this album and the stories it tells.”

The accompanying music video, directed by South African filmmaker Garrick Williams, explores love beyond appearances or material wealth. The visuals depict Bebe Cool and his love interest as equal partners, emphasising their deep connection and shared journey in both love and business.

To coincide with the release, Bebe Cool launched Motivation Week in Uganda, an annual initiative held in the week following Valentine’s Day. The initiative aims to celebrate motivators across various fields and encourage conversations around inspiration and resilience. Speaking at a roundtable discussion with media personalities, he reflected on his musical journey and the determination that led him to pursue a global career. He shared how his drive took him to Nairobi in 1997, where he became one of the first artists signed to Ogopa Deejays, a leading record label in East Africa.

Bebe Cool was instrumental in shaping Uganda’s modern music scene, gaining prominence in the early 2000s. In 2004, he teamed up with Kenyan reggae and hip-hop group Necessary Noize, comprising Wyre and Nazizi, to form the East African Bashment Crew. The supergroup achieved continental success with hits such as Africa Unite, Kube, and Fire Anthem.

With a career spanning over two decades, Bebe Cool remains one of Uganda’s most influential artists. Known for hits such as ‘Mbozi Za Malwa’ featuring Sauti Sol and ‘Love You Everyday’, he has won over 20 awards and collaborated with numerous international artists. Beyond music, he is also a dedicated philanthropist and Uganda’s Tuberculosis Ambassador, raising awareness about the disease.
