SAMRO Foundation

Bio

The SAMRO Foundation is a non-profit organisation that replaces the SAMRO Endowment for the National Arts (SENA). The Foundation is the social investment and music education arm of the Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO). The aims of the SAMRO Foundation include the promotion of the national arts through sponsorships of various kinds, encouraging excellence in the arts through education, facilitating economic participation in the creative economy, influencing cultural and arts policy by means of research and advocacy, and promoting living cultural heritage. The Foundation houses one of the largest archive of original South African art music and has been indexing and digitally uploading contemporary light music scores as well.

The SAMRO Foundation is involved in outreach programmes and sponsorship of the arts. The main objective is to create and maintain an environment in which the arts in South Africa may flourish. This includes giving broad support to composers, musicians, and arts organisations in South Africa. The Foundation offers some of the largest scholarships and bursaries for music students in the country and their Overseas Scholarships have helped boost the careers of many well-known performers. Their Music Archive, which holds over 100 000 music scores, serves as a resource for researchers and artists. Through their newly created Stakeholder Hub, the foundation builds relationships with other arts organisations and helps incubate growing businesses. The SAMRO Foundation has undergone a lot of growth recently and will always stay true to its vision of investing in the value of music.
