Afronation festival comes to Ghana
The announcement of a Ghana edition of the Afronation festival, which will take place 27 to 30 December in Accra, has received a surfeit of attention online.
The organisers say the preregistration response has been "overwhelming". This is based on data from its recently launched website for the Ghana edition.
“This response validates our firm belief in Ghana as a potential destination for music tastemakers and the global impact of the Afrobeat movement to attract massive crowds everywhere it goes,” said Adesegun Adeosun Jr of SMADE Entertainment, one of the organising outfits behind the event.
Adeosun added that the event would create an entirely new encounter for patrons with a stellar line-up, world-class production and streamlined management processes as witnessed in any top festival, ensuring an unforgettable festival experience.
In a note about the choice of Ghana for the maiden African edition, the event's organisers said: "Ghana's stunning coastline stretches 560km, with white sandy beaches that hug the Atlantic Ocean and average daily temperatures of 30°C. It’s no surprise that we’ve chosen this incredible location as our next festival destination."
According to an official statement released by the festival, preregistration requests reached over 8 000 online, 85% of which was from the UK and elsewhere in Europe. The overwhelming nature of the response, say the organisers, testifies to the global growth of Afrobeat music and the touristic reputation of Ghana. Other genres to be featured on the night include hiplife, Afropop, hip hop, UK rap, reggae and dancehall.
The first Afronation concert is scheduled to take place in the Algarve in Portugal this August. Taking to the stage in Portugal are some of Africa's most popular acts, including Nigerian trio Wizkid, Burna Boy and Davido. Also performing are Maleek Berry, Mr Eazi and Afro B. The first wave of tickets was sold out within hours of its availability online.
A line-up for the Ghana edition has not been released but the organisers say the venue and ticketing information will be announced over the next few weeks.
