Listen to Michael Kiwanuka's new single Money
After a two-year hiatus, British-Ugandan musician Michael Kiwanuka has returned with a funkified song titled 'Money'.
'Money', a collaborative project with British producer Tom Misch, sees the singer sing notes beyond his usual vocal range while American Grammy winner YEBBA provides backing vocals
Describing the theme in the song to The FADER, Kiwanuka said: "The premise of 'Money' is that, at first listen, it's a song about money and how much I want it and love it.
"I want to use the money to meet people and be around people that have a lot of it. However, as you listen closely, it's actually about how too much love for money can be dangerous."
Misch said: "I have been a big fan of Michael for a few years, so I was excited to work with him. In the session, it was cool to find we share a common love for '80s and disco so we thought we would try something with that vibe."
The release of 'Money' could be a sign that Kiwanuka could follow in the footsteps of London-based Ugandan musician Kaz Kasozi, a celebrated world musician who has for more than three decades mastered the fusion of funk, soul, rock and Afro-jazz.
