Angelique Kidjo to perform at Kampala jazz event

At the concert, which will take place at Kampala Serena Hotel, the 'Wombolombo' singer will be joined by Canadian saxophonist Darren Rahn and Ugandan jazz act Isaiah Katumwa. The event is sponsored by Uganda Breweries under its Johnnie Walker brand.

“This year we bring you two international acts with great influence in both jazz and African music culture," said Katumwa, the event's artistic spearhead. "We are looking forward to an evening that will be defined by the rich and eclectic sounds of two of the most outstanding jazz icons of our times.”

The annual concert, organised by Katumwa, was created to celebrate African jazz acts and takes place on the International World Jazz Day, an event celebrated the world over.

Kidjo, the winner of three Grammys and numerous other awards, has received both commercial success and critical acclaim for her work. Her recent interpretation of the 1980 album Remain in Light by Talking Heads has been heavily praised and has led to performances in several countries around the world, including the United Arab Emirates and US.

Kidjo's colleague on the night, Rahn, has received several Grammy nominations for his work released over 11 years. He has worked as an artist, producer and mixing engineer.

“Kidjo and Rahn are phenomenal jazz artists of great talent," said Annette Nakiyaga, head of the luxury portfolio at Uganda Breweries. "Kidjo was named one of Africa’s most iconic figures by BBC and that alone qualifies her as the perfect headliner for us at this concert because Johnnie Walker is an icon of progress." 

Kidjo's last album, Celia, was released in honour of the late Cuban singer Celia Cruz.
