SA’s Ringo Madlingozi to headline Kigali Jazz Junction
South African singer Ringo Madlingozi is set to headline the Kigali Jazz Junction concert which will be held at the Kigali Conference and Exhibition Village on 29 June.
The ‘Sondela’ hitmaker will be joined by Ugandan musician Bebe Cool.
Speaking to Music In Africa, Kigali Jazz Junction founder Remmy Lubega explained the motivation behind the selection.
“Ringo is a legend and a great Afro-fusion act,” he said. “His music is deep and authentic, which has enabled him to remain relevant in music for the past 35years. He also brings on board the middle-age music jazz lovers and resonates so much with our greater crowd.
“Bebe Cool is currently a trending African brand and we thought his energy on stage and style blends well with the youthful crowd. So we are certain that his presence will ensure that the youth are not left out in the experience of jazz music.”
He added that the event, which is now in its third year, will for the first time provide a red carpet experience and feature most of the local artists that have previously performed. “The idea was to have all the local artistes who have been part of this stage since we started come and celebrate with us. We have a huge space for everyone to dance enjoy.”
Asked how the event has benefited Rwanda’s music scene, Lubega said: “We showcase a maximum of 8 editions every year making us the most consistent jazz event in the region. We have increased the popularity of many artists by providing a platform for them to showcase alongside some of Africa’s greatest such as Isaiah Katumwa, Zahara and American Phyllisia Ross.
Mani Martin, one of the local artists scheduled to perform, said: “I feel very much honoured to be invited in this third year anniversary especially to be on the same stage with Ringo. I grew up listening to him. I loved Sondela so much and all my friends knew it. I am glad that we have such an event which gives the locals a taste of jazz.”
Other local artists set to entertain revellers backed by the Neptunez Band are Nep Djs, Rosette Karimba, Makumbi Sound and Hope Irakoze.
