Wrapped 2021: Spotify unveils most streamed music and artists in SA
Spotify has unveiled its annual list of the most streamed songs, artists and albums in South Africa.
DJ Maphorisa is the only local musician in the Top 10 Most Streamed Artists list, where he occupies eighth place. The chart features some of the biggest popstars in the world like Drake, The Weeknd and Ed Sheeran. The amapiano producer is followed by Taylor Swift and Doja Cat in ninth and 10th place, respectively.
As expected, DJ Maphorisa leads the Top 10 Most Streamed South African Artists list and is followed by Kabza De Small, Busta 929, De Mthuda, Mr JazziQ, Joyous Celebration, Nasty C, Makhadzi, Appel and A-Reece. He also appears twice in the Top 10 Most Streamed South African Tracks list with ‘Izolo’ and ‘Banyana’. The most streamed South African track on Spotify for 2021 is ‘Umsebenzi Wethu’ by Busta 929.
Afrikaans star Riaan Benadé’s Spontaan was the most streamed South African album this year, beating hip hop offerings such as Blxckie’s B4Now and A-Reece’s Today's Tragedy, Tomorrow's Memory: The Mixtape. In fourth place is amapiano album Undisputed Vol 2 by Busta 929 followed by Makhadzi’s Kokovha and African Queen. Makhadzi also made the Top 10 Most Streamed South African Artists list and was the most streamed South African female artist with almost 10 million streams globally this year.
Amapiano continues to dominate Spotify’s algorithms in South Africa, with AmaPiano Grooves being the most streamed playlist in the country. The genre also boasts the most streamed SA track, namely ‘Umsebenzi Wethu’ (Busta 929), which is followed by ‘John Wick’ (De Mthuda), ‘Izolo’ (DJ Maphorisa), ‘Abalele’ (Kabza De Small) and Banyana (DJ Maphorisa).
