Fatoumata Diawara tops Transglobal World Music July chart with London Ko album

Released on 12 May via 3ème Bureau/Wagram label, London Ko combines traditional Malian music with elements of Afrobeats, jazz, pop and electronica. Renowned British musician and Blur frontman Damon Albarn produced six out of the album’s 14 tracks, while notable guest appearances include Cuban piano virtuoso Roberto Fonseca, Nigerian Afropop singer and activist Yemi Alade and French musician -M-.

Diawara is also behind three other critically acclaimed LPs: Fatou (2011), Fenfo (2018) and Maliba (2022).

Launched in October 2015, the TWMC provides a platform for world music writers and radio DJs specialising in traditional and contemporary folk music, worldbeat, global fusion and global electronica. Distinguishing itself from conventional popularity-based charts, the TWMC emphasises the promotion of talent based on merit and cultural significance.

Also appearing on the July chart are releases from the likes of Kayhan Kalhor and Toumani Diabaté, whose collabo The Sky Is the Same Colour Everywhere holds the second position. This is followed by Ali Farka Touré’s Voyageur at No 3, with Damir Imamović’s The World and All That It Holds and Baaba Maal’s Being completing the top five.

Nigerian Afrobeat band BANTU’s What Is Your Breaking Point? occupies the No 11 spot, while Malian group Al Bilali Soudan’s Babi sits at No 14. Ghanaian artist King Ayisoba’s Work Hard sits at No 39, while the Grammy-winning Tuareg collective Tinariwen occupies No 40 with Amatssou.
