Zakes Bantwini features on reimagined version of Johnny Clegg’s The Crossing (Osiyeza)
14 Jul 2026 - 15:31
South African musician and producer Zakes Bantwini has released a new interpretation of Johnny Clegg's The Crossing (Osiyeza) as part of the Scatterlings project.
Msaki, Zakes Bantwini, Jesse Clegg and Skye Wanda.
The reworked version features Jesse Clegg, Msaki, Skye Wanda and archival vocals from the late Johnny Clegg, bringing together artists from different generations in a tribute to one of Clegg's best-known songs.
According to the project organisers, the new recording aims to preserve the original song's themes of transition, remembrance and hope while introducing it to new audiences through contemporary Afro-electronic production.
Jesse Clegg's contribution connects the project to his father's musical legacy, while Msaki and Skye Wanda provide additional vocal performances alongside Bantwini's production.
The release forms part of the Scatterlings project, which revisits Johnny Clegg's catalogue through collaborations with contemporary South African artists.
Bantwini, a singer, songwriter and producer, has become one of South Africa's leading dance music artists through his blend of Afro-house, electronic music and African musical influences. His 2021 single Osama achieved commercial success in South Africa and internationally, while subsequent releases, including Imali and the album Ghetto King, have earned industry recognition.
The release of The Crossing (Osiyeza) continues efforts to reinterpret Clegg's music for contemporary audiences while maintaining the themes and legacy of the original composition.
