Nigeria: Juju, highlife musician St Janet dies after brief illness

Nigerian juju and highlife musician Iyun Janet Ajilore, popularly known as St Janet, has died after a brief illness. She was reportedly pronounced dead on 1 August.

Her death was announced on 2 August by publisher and socialite Otunba Femi Davies in a post on Facebook.
“St Janet (Iyun Janet Ajilore), a popular Nigerian Juju and Highlife musician known for her vibrant live performances, energetic stage presence and socially unfiltered party tracks, is dead. She died after a brief illness on Saturday,” Davies wrote.
St Janet was known for her energetic performances and party-oriented music, which earned her a following among audiences in Nigeria and beyond. She regularly performed at social gatherings and celebrations and became a recognisable figure within Nigeria’s traditional popular music scene.
Her work across Juju and Highlife earned her recognition among audiences who followed the genres, while her performances made her a familiar presence at social events.
News of her death has prompted tributes from fans, colleagues and admirers, who have remembered her for her contribution to Nigerian entertainment and the joy her music brought to audiences over the course of her career.
