The musician, whose real name was Muhammadu Buhari, reportedly died on 2 August following a brief illness. His death has prompted mourning across Nigeria’s political and entertainment circles.
Born in Katsina State, Kosan Waka built a significant following in Kano, where his music combined traditional Hausa instrumentation with contemporary political commentary. His songs were used during election campaigns and became popular through campaign rallies, local radio and social media platforms.
He became particularly associated with the Kwankwasiyya political movement and its prominent figures, producing songs that helped communicate political messages to supporters and voters during electoral contests in Kano State.
Beyond political praise, his music also addressed social issues, including poverty and the responsibilities of political leaders. His songs often translated political messages and campaign themes into accessible language for grassroots audiences.
Kosan Waka’s work reflected the long-standing role of Hausa praise singers in northern Nigeria, where musicians have traditionally served as intermediaries between political leaders and the public. His ability to combine entertainment, political messaging and social commentary made him a prominent figure in the region's political music culture.
His death has been met with tributes from admirers and members of the political and entertainment communities, who have remembered his contribution to Hausa music and political communication in northern Nigeria.
