NEFCISA

The Music In Africa Foundation (MIAF) is proud of its partnership with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) as a Strategic Implementing Partner (SIP) for its Social Employment Fund (SEF). Through this collaboration, MIAF is running a national programme that is creating jobs, addressing skills gaps, and strengthening South Africa's creative industries — in line with the SEF's overarching goal to generate work for the common good and build community value through employment, social contribution, and inclusive economic participation. Operating under the banner NEFCISA (National Employment Facility for Creative Industries in South Africa), the initiative is recruiting and training participants, matching them with host organisations, and has already placed 1 500 workers across the country — surpassing its original target of 1 000. NEFCISA is delivered through a network of 20 host organisations spanning five provinces, who are actively hosting participants and contributing to work for the common good across South Africa's creative and cultural industries. Key Objectives: Support employment and entrepreneurship in the creative industries. Offer skills development and training programmes. Foster partnerships between public and private creative sectors. Promote South African creativity at both provincial and national levels Foster community development through social contribution.

Gender@Work
Gender@Work

Music In Africa Gender @ Work is a three-year training programme aimed at upskilling and increasing the participation of female professionals in the African music sector. Launched by the Music In Africa Foundation (MIAF) in April 2019, the programme is connected to the MIAF’s ACCES music conference – a pan-African event held in a different African country every year. This connection enables the programme to reach new participants in a different African country every year. The programme marks the beginning of a more concerted effort by the Foundation to support the participation and inclusion of women in all facets of its programmes and the music sector in Africa as a whole. Over the three years, the programme will aim to address gender imbalances in the sector through training, lobbying, facilitating knowledge exchange and dialogues that foster the interest of women. The broader objectives of the programme are to: Provide industry training for women on critical music industry skills, focusing on: Stage management Electronic music production and recording Music business management Technical knowledge Provide an opportunity for both professional and aspiring women to benefit from the Music In Africa network and its broad range of activities in 2019, 2020 and 2021. For cultural and creative practitioners and organisations operating in southern Africa, access to funding remains a major challenge. The COVID-19 pandemic has also had a massive impact on government policy, spending and the economy in general, and has seen spending on culture being moved further down the list of priorities. Further, the cultural and creative industries repeatedly cite four main areas where investment is needed for growth, which are increased visibility, mobility including access to new markets, finance and support structures.

Nearly 16 Zimbabwean DJs, producers and artists are set to feature on Inner Visions, a multi-track Afro-house compilation scheduled for release in November.

The compilation is intended to provide a collective snapshot of Zimbabwe’s evolving Afro-house scene. In the photo: Dr Feel

The project was initiated and curated by South Africa-based Zimbabwean DJ and producer Dr Feel and brings together artists including DJ Stavo, Nitefreak, Dr Chaii, Ryan Synth, MIčI, Reverb, TAPIWA, Simbai, Tashinga, Shona, PA NGU, Afro Wav, Takue SBT, Josh Major, Daphfinee and Taarof Adder.

The compilation is intended to provide a collective snapshot of Zimbabwe’s evolving Afro House scene, bringing together established and emerging artists working across different styles within the genre.

Rather than centring on a single artist, Inner Visions brings together musicians whose work has increasingly reached audiences beyond Zimbabwe. The project explores themes of identity, memory and experience through electronic music while placing Zimbabwean artists within the wider African Afro House scene.

“Inner Visions is about looking inward before you look outward,” Dr Feel said. “This is Zimbabwean Afro House, told by the people making it right now, for anyone in the world who wants to listen.”

Dr Feel has released more than 200 singles and more than 10 EPs, as well as the albums Made in Africa and Indalo. His releases have appeared on labels and platforms including Defected, Sondela, Deep Root Tribe, Nervous and Aluku, while his music has received support from Black Coffee, Keinemusik, Shimza, Themba and Djeff.

He has also performed at events and venues including Sondela Summer Party and Badbox & Friends in London, Cé La Vi in Dubai and Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE), as well as in Germany, France, Kenya, Cyprus, Zambia and Johannesburg.

Inner Visions, however, extends beyond Dr Feel’s own catalogue, bringing together producers such as Nitefreak and Dr Chaii with other established and emerging Zimbabwean artists.

Dr Feel said the compilation was intended to document the country’s Afro House community at its current stage of development.

“Inner Visions is bigger than any one of us. It’s a record of where Zimbabwean Afro House stands right now, made by the people building it. I wanted the world to hear Zimbabwe the way I hear it,” he said.

Tendai Joe, PR and Communications Manager for the project, said the collaboration could provide a platform for artists seeking to expand their reach internationally.

“I’m happy to see the unity and the willingness of DJs and producers across the ecosystem to come together with the intention of creating a united front and a united platform that can help everyone grow, both individually and collectively,” Joe said.

“With the growth of House music around the world, we believe this could become one of the foundations for the Zimbabwean House music community to grow beyond our borders. Some of our artists are already operating beyond Zimbabwe, but this is an opportunity for us to build collectively, expand our reach and do amazing things together.”

He added: “Ultimately, we want to raise the Zimbabwean flag, see our artists performing in different markets around the world and create more opportunities for Zimbabwean House music to be heard, experienced and recognised internationally.”

Inner Visions is scheduled for release in November through South African House music label Mansa Musa. JBross Media Group is handling the project’s communications and media campaign.
