Back to the City Marks Two Decades of South African Hip-Hop Culture

Johannesburg’s hip-hop community is heading to Newtown as Back to the City celebrates its 20th anniversary at Mary Fitzgerald Square on 10 October 2026.

The festival brings together South African hip-hop heavyweights, international acts and a wide range of street-culture experiences, while also marking 50 years since the 1976 youth uprising and 140 years of Johannesburg.

The international bill features US hip-hop acts Ab-Soul, Slum Village, and Blu & Exile. South African performers include Cassper Nyovest, Emtee, Blxckie, Stogie T, Reason, Tuks, Touchline, Dee Koala, Frank Casino, Zakwe, Maraza, Buzzi Lee, Kane Keid, Zulu Mecca and Loatinover Pounds.

A special Heritage Moment: Legends Celebration will also feature kwaito group Trompies.

Beyond the Music

Back to the City is built around hip-hop culture beyond live performances. Visitors can expect DJ and MC battles, graffiti and street art, skateboarding, basketball, gaming, fashion, food and creative activations.

The programme also includes a Hip Hop Summit, covering issues such as streaming, publishing, ownership, artificial intelligence and entrepreneurship.

More than 140 local vendors are expected, offering fashion, streetwear, thrift, jewellery, art, food and lifestyle products.
