BIO
Mafilika is one of the popular music outfit from Malawi. The group is made up of the following members: Ernest Ikwanga (guitarist & lead vocals), Ephraim Chirwa (Bassist & backing vocals), Sam Mkandawire (Keyboardist & backing vocals) and Amos Mlolowa (drums). It draws its aspirations from music icons such as Richard Bona, Ettien Mbappe, Wambali, Bob Marley, George Benson, Morgan Heritage, U2 and Jimi Hendrix. Founded in 2007, the different backgrounds and cultural roots of its members inspired the style of music which fuses rock, jazz and reggae genres.
In 2008, they represented the country at the 2008 Music Crossroads Inter-regional Festival. In 2009, they toured The Netherlands where they held 17 concerts. The tour was courtesy of Mundial Productions. In 2010, they returned to Europe after winning a music competition organised by the World Bank & Jeunesses Musicales International. At that event, Mafilika participated in the Fairplay Youth Voices campaign against corruption.
They have also made tours throughout Africa. They traveled to Mozambique for the Independence Music Festival in Maputo. Locally, they have worked with organizations such as UNICEF, PSI and Plan International as an entertainment group during the organisations’ nationwide tours.
