BIO
Mutinda - winner of the 2010 International Songwriting Competition in the World Music Category - is a strong singer/songwriter, vocalist and acoustic guitarist playing World Music and afro-folk, which contains rare sounds of Kenyan Music meeting the global contemporary influences of today.
Mutinda is a self-taught musician who began pursuing his career in his childhood by playing a home-made guitar. Growing up in a typical rural setting and later living in one of the toughest neighborhoods in Nairobi has made Mutinda interact with all kinds of people, whose lives and choices give him inspiration to share his messages, and be an encouragement, a motivation for change.
For Mutinda music is an opportunity to share his inner realizations and truths and to connect with people through a personal life experience.
Mutinda’s music is a journey through time and space. The sound is a blend of afro-modern music, ambient moods, rock beats and afro-jazz rhythms, and contains the rare sounds and rhythms of Kenyan people’s traditional music meeting the world influences today.
Mutinda sings in Kiswahili and Kikamba (his mother-tongue).
Marrying African traditional instruments such as maboom-boom drums, djembe, African flute with global elements such as guitar, bass, keyboard, sax, violin and drums, Mutinda has created a unique style of soul-searching melodies and contagious rhythms.
He has performed in Denmark and Sweden and at various festivals, including sauti za Busara. He was winner of Spotlight on Kenyan Music (2005). In 2009 he launched his 'Matopeni' album.
