BIO
Peter Msechu was born in 1988 in the Kigoma region of northern Tanzania, close to the border with Burundi. He started singing aged 10 when his father took him to join Kigoma Lutheran Church Choir, where his father was the teacher. In 2009 Peter’s talents came under the national spotlight in Bongo Star Search (BSS), a weekly TV talent competition.
He faced many challenges - his experience was limited to choir singing, while fellow contestants were singing a range of popular styles. After delivering his own first composition, feedback from the judges (Madam Rita, Salama Jabir, P Funk and Master J) helped Msechu to find a new confidence.
He changed tactics and started re-interpreting old hits with energetic performances. He quickly developed a wide fan-base among young Tanzanians. Msechu eventually came in at number two. He set up his own band and Within months had released two major hits, 'Hasira Hasara' and 'Relax', collaborating with Kenya-based Burundian musician Kidum.
By 2010, after becoming popular all over Tanzania, he joined Tusker Project Fame, a similar talent search with contestants from all over East Africa. Again he finished in second place. In doing so, Peter accumulated more fans throughout the region. Since then Peter has performed all over East Africa, as well as the USA.
