Open call: Women In Concert Series workshop
The Women In Concert Series in Kenya has announced a new workshop initiative aimed at providing local musicians with practical insights about essential music industry topics. The workshops will be facilitated by key practitioners in the music business.
The first workshop will be a songwriting masterclass hosted by Kenyan singer Atemi Oyungu on 14 October 2023 at the Santuri Salon in Westlands, Nairobi. The workshop will see the participants learn from Oyungu’s songwriting approach first-hand, before being taken through a practical songwriting session that will also provide them with them networking opportunities.
The Women In Music Concert Series began in 2016 with regular shows held at the Goethe-Institut Nairobi and has so far featured some 35 female musicians including popular artists like Nikita Kering', Chemutai Sage and Mayonde.
“I am excited about this new chapter of our platform as this workshop series will equip musicians with practical skills that they can apply in their music making endeavours,” Women In Music Concert Series founder Christine Kamau said.
Oyungu is a singer, songwriter and entertainer. She was a member of the Kenyan girl band Intu until 2007 when the group split. She released her debut album Hatimaye in 2008 followed by her second offering Manzili in 2013. She has worked with various musicians including Eric Wainaina, Nikki, Lady Jaydee, Chris Adwar and Sauti Sol’s Savara Mudigi.
Santuri Salon, meanwhile, is a music innovation hub based in Nairobi. It’s part of Santuri East Africa, a social enterprise and arts organisation that focuses primarily on electronic music culture. The Santuri Salon space connects artists to knowledge, music technology, production, recording facilities and cultural dialogues.
