Afropolitan Vibes to host Iyanya, Paul Play Dairo, Mz Kiss and Leeroy
12 Jun 2017 - 12:59
The now quarterly Afropolitan Vibes event returns on 16 June with four artists: Iyanya, Paul Play Dairo, Mz Kiss and Leroy.
The June edition of the event is the first since the producers of the concert series announced that the show would take place quarterly as well as at a new venue. While still in Lagos, Afropolitan Vibes will now take place at Muri Okunola Park.
It will be the first time Iyanya appears on the Afropolitan Vibes stage. The artist, famous for the hit song ‘Kukere’, made a surprise move to Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records in October 2016. Under the label, he released an EP titled Signature in March.
Iyanya’s countryman Paul Play Dairo is the son of famous juju artist IK Dairo. Dairo Jr was one of a few artists who had some success in the early 2000s, seen by some commentators as the start of a resurgence in Nigerian pop music. An illness took him out of the scene for some time but he has returned to recording music.
Mz Kiss is an upcoming act signed to Capital Records. In 2010, she released her first single ‘You go Craze’. A few years and some singles later, she was spotted by rapper Ill Bliss who signed her to Capital Records. In January, she released the video to the single ‘Fuji’. The sole non-Nigerian set to perform, rapper Leeroy, was part of Saïan Supa Crew, a French rap supergroup formed in the mid-'90s. All four artists will be backed by the in-house Bantu band.
Bantu leader and co-producer of the concert series Ade Bantu shared a poster of the event on social media along with a message: “I have been having Afropolitan Vibes withdrawal syndrome for months… so you can imagine my excitement and eagerness to perform next week… Looking forward to seeing you at our new home Muri Okunola Park.”
The June 2017 edition of the Afropolitan Vibes concert will take place on 16 June Muri Okunola Park, Victoria Island, Lagos. Gate fee: 1 000 naira ($3)
