Apple Music names Khaid as latest Up Next Nigeria artist
Apple Music this week announced Nigerian singer-songwriter Khaid as the latest artist in its Up Next artist development programme.
The initiative, which focuses on identifying and showcasing emerging talent around the world, will see Khaid join fellow Nigerians Wavy The Creator, Rema, Burna Boy, Mr Eazi and Tems, all of whom have made an appearance on the Up Next platform in the past.
Khaid will be featured on Apple Music Nigeria’s Up Next playlist. The curated playlist features a dynamic class of new and emerging voices selected by Apple Music’s editors. In the past, Up Next artists have received performance slots on US TV shows The Late Late Show with James Corden and Jimmy Kimmel Live! and have been included on an exclusive Apple Music EP comprising their Up Next live performances.
“I am so grateful and amazed with how far I have come and I am very excited to be an Apple Music Up Next artist and to see that my sound is being accepted globally,” Khaid said. “This encourages me more to make music for everyone, everywhere around the globe. As I said, I am diverse and I still maintain my ground. Diversity is the vision.”
Signed to Neville Records, the 17 year old has released notable tracks like ‘With You’ and ‘SKI’. His 2022 Diversity EP melds emo-trap and Afropop. He cites fellow Nigerian musicians like 2Baba, P-Square, D'banj, Wizkid, Davido and Olamide as his musical influences.
Speaking to The Knockturnal earlier this year, Khaid said his music journey was inspired by “the influence of those around me, ‘cause I grew up in a family that listened to different genres of music for the love of it. Having friends, too, who loved music was everything. Freestyling on the streets was everything for me.”
