Call for auditions: Twaweza Live Meru Kenya
Kenyan telco Safaricom is calling on musicians, DJs and hype masters based in Kenya's Central and North Eastern regions to audition for a chance to be part of the 2018 Twaweza Live concert tour.
The latest auditions will take place between 9am and 3pm on 19 June at the Three Steers Hotel in Meru.
The first Twaweza Live audition took place in Nairobi last month. It then went to Eldoret in the former Rift Valley province where more than 300 local hopefuls came out to impress the judges. SDE Entertainment reported that about 15 000 people turned up for the concert at Eldoret Sports Club on 26 May.
The auditions are part of a seven-month campaign running until November to engage with communities in the Rift, Central, Eastern, Coast, Nyanza, Western and Nairobi regions through free medical camps, campus takeovers, device offers, talent search activities, youth mentorship programmes and concerts.
The campaign's focus is on growing and nurturing local music talent by giving artists from various local communities a chance to perform live.
Successful participants will share the stage with musicians Bahati, David Wonder, MC Alemba, Mercy Masika, Nyashinski, Njugus, King Kaka, and DJ Joe Mfalme, DJ Euphoric, DJ Pierra.
The top musician chosen at the audition will collaboratate with the tour’s headlining act which will be recorded by producer Eric Musyoka and shared on the Songa and Skiza music platforms. Local artist Andrew Towett emerged the winner during the Rift Valley auditions.
“What I saw in Andrew was prowess in songwriting. He had what it takes to collaborate with Naiboi. I don’t think he expected to win because some guys really brought their A game on," Musyoka said.
Participants need to be in possession of a national ID card and have the Songa app installed on their phones. Auditions will be based on a first come, first served basis and participants will be required to cater for their own food and transportation.
