Call for registration: Royalty collection system in Kenya
Users of music and dramatic works in public business premises are required by the Kenya Copyright Board (KECOBO) to register with the newly launched self-licensing digital royalty collecting system.
The digital system is intended to better account for royalties collected, distributed or expended by the Music Copyright Society of Kenya, the Kenya Association of Music Producers and the Performance Rights Society of Kenya.
The system is linked to the relevant sector tariffs as well as the National Transport and Safety Authority, the Business Registration Service and the Kenya Revenue Authority database for easy transaction.
The system accepts the following modes of payment:
- Institutional cheque.
- Bank transfers.
- M-Pesa mobile money.
How to register
- Create an account here before logging into the system here.
- Users can also use USSD code *534# and follow the instructions.
Note:
- All deposits will go to an authorised joint account at NCBA bank.
- Cash payments should not be issued to any individual.
- KECOBO will supervise the activities of the new system.
Meanwhile, users of music are reminded that KECOBO is offering half-day or one full-day free training on copyright. Interested parties should submit written training requests to KECOBO giving at least two to three weeks’ notice. KECOBO will confirm training within seven days of receiving the request.
