Candlelight to celebrate Women’s Day with Serendipity Strings in Joburg

Formed in Pretoria in 2015, Serendipity Strings has gained recognition for its engaging performances and wide-ranging repertoire, which bridges the gap between classical tradition and contemporary favourites. The ensemble is made up of Carli D’Alebout and Carmi Viljoen on violin, Friederike Scholtz on viola, and Mietze Dill on cello. Their recent performances have placed a strong focus on the works of female composers, alongside timeless classics by Haydn, Shostakovich, and others.

“For this occasion, the group will perform Candlelight: Queen vs. ABBA, a tribute to two of pop-rock’s most iconic bands,” the organisers said. “The programme will include beloved hits such as ‘Dancing Queen’, ‘Waterloo’ and ‘Mamma Mia’ by ABBA, as well as ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘Somebody to Love’, and ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ by Queen, among many others.”

Candlelight has become a global phenomenon, attracting more than three million attendees across over 150 cities. The series is known for transforming unique and historic venues into intimate performance spaces lit by thousands of candles, creating a powerful musical experience. The aim, the organisers said, is to “democratise access to classical music by bringing it to new audiences in breath-taking venues.”

The NH Johannesburg Sandton venue, known for its modern style and central location, will host this special tribute. The performance will highlight not only the musical legacies of Queen and ABBA, but also celebrate the artistry, leadership and resilience of women in music – aligning with the spirit and significance of National Women’s Day in South Africa.
