DJs based in Ghana would have heaved a collective sigh of relief when the winner of the Best DJ category at the Rush Ghana DJ Awards was announced at the weekend.
For each of the last four editions, when the awards were called the Ghana DJ Awards, a single DJ, DJ Black, was crowned Best DJ at Ghana’s most respected DJ awards. But the Accra-based DJ’s run was ended by DJ Vyrusky, who received several nominations. DJ Vyrusky, who is also based in Accra, won the Overall Best DJ of the Year award, which is a renamed category following various changes.
Both DJs work for radio stations; while DJ Black plies his trade at Joy FM, DJ Vyrusky is at Starr FM.
DJ Vyrusky, whose real name is Kofi Amoako, won three more awards. He was named Best Artiste DJ for working with dancehall artist Shatta Wale. He was also named Best DJ (Greater Accra region) and Best Event DJ. This is the first year the awards were split into regions, a response to criticism of the awards for being focused on DJs working in Accra.
