The Gambia Academy music school needs support.
The school, which comprises six departments, offers lessons in artistic and cultural development. Its first department was founded in 2015 and named after the kora player Amadu Bansang Jobarteh.
The school’s first 22 pupils were selected for their potential by the school’s founder, the renowned kora player Sona Jobarteh. Since the school opened its doors to students, she has also funded their education.
According to an undated note on Jobarteh’s website, the school has also received sponsorship from Africa Festival in Germany.
Nonetheless, Jobarteh has now made an open plea for assistance.
“I’m appealing for support for the educational and cultural institution I’m building in the Gambia – The Gambia Academy,” she posted on Facebook.
“I have just finished building dedicated accommodation for volunteers and international students who want to take courses in kora, balafon, drum, dance and kora-making. The accommodation is in a beautiful village in the south of Gambia, and a few minutes walk from the breathtaking beaches.
“More volunteers needed: particularly in the areas of management, and maths, English, science and music. Donations of teaching and stationery much needed for our full-time students! Please reach out with any interests or support.”
Interested sponsors can contact the school here.
