Malawian soul singer George Kalukusha launches new EP
Stepping in from Lilongwe’s cool breeze on Saturday afternoon down into Koko Bean Café in Lilongwe, you would have been able to witness the launch of George Kalukusha‘s new EP, Growing Pains.
Together with Rosha and Edson – that’s the rest of the George Kalukusha Trio – they put on a great show to a crowded open space of pleased music patrons, rolling out their bluesy collection from their new album, assisted by Rosha on bass.
The show was enlivened by a spectacular performance from Menes, followed by Adrian, who also appears on the track ‘The Night Is Young’ on this remarkable CD. The EP also features 2014 Music Malawi Awards (MUMA) winner for best male RnB artist, Danny Kalima. Adrian plays guitar and when combined with George’s rhythms, what a groovy sound this makes. He was joined on stage by Gwamba, Lulu and Third Eye, who did a special guest set with his howling reed style of punchlines.
Patrons at the event enjoyed and sang along to the most favored track from the six-track EP, ‘Good Blood’. With its driving, forceful rhythm and strong message, it sent people home with delightful memories of the well-organized event.
Sally Nyondo, the owner of Koko Bean Café, who is also a well-known musician, said: “George and the band put on a really good show indeed. It might have been nice if more Malawians appreciated the great talent on stage and helped each other put the talents to good use.”
Most of the songs in the EP were produced by George’s brother, Shadreck Kalukusha, and some by Samuel Genda. The album consists of the following songs: ‘One Two Steps’, ‘Slow down (Call Me)’, ‘Good Blood’, ‘Caravan’, ’Fond Of Me' (featuring Danny Kalima) and ‘The Night is Young’ (featuring Adrian and Danny Kalima). The single ‘Good Blood' is available for free download here.
