Nigeria: Burna Boy releases new album Twice As Tall
Nigerian Afrobeats star Burna Boy on 13 August released his fifth LP titled Twice As Tall.
- Burna Boy.
The 15-track album is available for streaming and download on various music platforms. It was produced by Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, Bose Ogulu and Burna Boy himself.
Twice As Tall boasts features from a number of prominent musicians such as Youssou N’Dour (Mali), Sauti Sol (Kenya), Naughty By Nature (US), Stormzy (UK) and Coldplay’s Chris Martin (UK), as well as contributions from Timbaland (US), Anderson .Paak (US) and Mike Dean (US).
“He, as every artist, wants his music to be heard by the world – he doesn’t care about crossing over," Diddy said about the Nigerian musician. "You know, he’s not trying to get hot. He’s not like ‘I want to be a big pop star’ – he’s already a star. He wants his music to be heard, his message, his people.”
The album has been described as “a beautiful mélange of sounds, a pure, unapologetic African body of work that boasts a global contemporary sound that is for everyone."
Twice As Tall was released alongside an animated comic on YouTube titled The Secret Flame, which the singer hopes will put the project into perspective. The comic is narrated by his grandfather, Benson Idonije, who managed Afrobeats pioneer Fela Kuti.
The album adds to Burna Boy’s list of achievements, which include a host of awards and a Grammy nomination in the World Music category last year. The musician has also collaborated with international artists such as Damian Marley and Ed Sheeran, among many others.
His other albums include L.I.F.E (2013), On a Spaceship (2015), Outside (2018) and African Giant (2019).
