Nigeria: Davido releases A Better Time album
Nigerian music star Davido released his new album A Better Time on 12 November.
The LP, which is available for streaming and download on all major digital service providers, was published on Sony Music UK. It comprises 17 songs including the singles ‘Fem’ and ‘So Crazy’ featuring American rapper Lil Baby. Other collaborators include global hip hop stars Nicki Minaj, Nas, Young Thug and Hit-Boy, as well as fellow Africans Tiwa Savage (Nigeria) and Mayorkun (Nigeria), Sauti Sol (Kenya) and Sho Madjozi (South Africa).
“This year we’ve been through crazy times,” Davido said. “And through it all, we’ve all had to look inwards to find our unique hopes of better times ahead. I found a few. In human form and creative form. I’m so glad I can finally share them with you.”
Like the title suggests, A Better Time revolves around themes of happiness and celebration. Although primarily set in Afropop rhythms, the album also features hip hop, Afro-house and Caribbean leanings.
A Better Time is Davido’s third album after 2019’s widely successful A Good Time and 2012’s Omo Baba Olowo. In August, discussing what the new album would entail, the musician said: “I feel like I’ve been in a better space. So you’re going to see a lot of growth on this album.”
Davido added that the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced him to cancel his tours, played a significant role in A Better Time’s making.
“If I was on tour, I’m not sure I would’ve had time to really record,” he told Complex. “But being in Lagos, at home, I was recording and recording so many songs and it ended up being really good. It took about two or three months but when I first started recording it, I had no plan, I just wanted to have fun with it.”
