Nigerian creative industries to receive government support

This was announced by Nigeria's Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Aisha Abubakar, who was represented by Adewale Bakare, a director at the ministry, at a recent event.

Creative Entrepreneurs Summit, which took place under the theme, Cashing in on Your Creativity, was organised by Global Entrepreneurship Network Nigeria and Enterprise Development Centre.

"I am aware that the Bank of Industry has approved facility of over 7 billion naira under its creative industry group to over 35 firms in content production, content distribution, production equipment, digital transmission equipment and others," Abubakar said.

“It is, however, obvious that the government needs to do more and it is in that respect that I want to stress that we are committed and determined in providing more support to the industry towards building on the foundation already laid for sustained long-term growth.

“We will continue to work closely with all stakeholders to give the creative industry the attention it requires for improved contribution to the GDP, wealth and job creation.

"It is my belief that the outcome of this conference will assist the government in evolving an effective policy framework and also redefining the path for the growth of the creative industry in our economy."

The minister spoke directly to the music industry and about how it had grown culturally and economically over the years.

“Musicians in the industry intertwine African cultural themes by infusing traditional styles into modern music creation and production,” she said. “This has generated a unique profile for the industry and fueled its popularity, giving the Nigerian music worldwide recognition. The lucrativeness of the industry, as well as the enabling environment it provides for all genres to thrive, is noteworthy.”

Abubakar also said that the Bank of Industry, the Nigerian Export Promotion Council and the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission would support Nigeria’s creative industries to enable them to make significant economic value to the country.
