Panel discussion: The African music sector
This is a summary of the major outcomes of a panel discussion titled The African Music Sector – Current Trends and Potential, which was held as part of the Music In Africa Foundation’s inaugural AGM Plus conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in November 2016.
The discussion – attached below – centred on African market trends and provided advice on how the sector could grow. Live music, the recording industry and digital platforms were some of the topics discussed by the panelists, who also took questions from the audience. Royalties, copyright and payments to artists was a central topic of debate, with the panelists, who comprised music professionals from across the continent, finding common challenges in their respective music industries.
Panelists included Mike Strano of East African music summit ONGEA! (Kenya), Luc Mayitoukou of Zhu Culture (Senegal), Michael Ugwu of Sony Music West Africa (Nigeria) and Madjid Babaci of Ethio Telecoms.
The Music In Africa Foundation takes its Annual General Meeting to a different African country each year, using the opportunity to bring influential music industry players from across the globe together to exchange ideas, discover new talent and accelerate the shaping of the vibrant music sector on the continent.
