Powerful SA women to join Erykah Badu at DStv fest

The event is set to celebrate the power of women with what the festival is calling the "Womandla stage line-up". Womandla is a portmanteau of 'woman' and 'amandla' (power).

Previously confirmed artists include New Zealand-born soul singer and multi-instrumentalist Jordan Rake, German DJ collective Jazzanova and British acid jazz band D’Influence. More acts will be announced in due course.

“These award-winning women have not only dominated our musical world but have stood up as shining examples of the creative power of women in the world,” the organisers said about the inclusion of the two South African singers on the festival roster.

“Together with these iconic acts, the festival will pay tribute to women in South Africa through song. This celebration of women and heritage will include tributes to key players in the trajectory of our country such as Mam’ Winnie Mandela.”

Boasting seven albums under her belt, Lira will entertain fans with her unique fusion of pop, soul and R&B. Dana, who is known for her combination of jazz, Afro-soul and traditional music, is expected to perform songs from her albums Zandisile and Kulture Noir, among others.

National Women's Day is celebrated on 9 August in South Africa. The day, as well as the whole month of August, honours the 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria on 9 August 1956. Led by anti-apartheid activists Lilian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa and Sophia Williams, the march was held to petition against the country's pass laws, which served to maintain population segregation, control urbanisation and manage migrant labour during the apartheid era.
