Rendezvous: MI Abaga drops new project
Nigerian act MI Abaga has released his seventh solo project.
The rapper announced the project by posting a terse tweet in the early hours of 9 February. “Sorry about the delay,” he wrote. “Rendezvous - A Playlist.”
Rendezvous follows three studio albums – 2008’s Talk About It, 2010’s MI2 and The Chairman from 2014. Abaga has also dropped three mixtapes: 2009’s Illegal Music, 2012’s Illegal Music, Illegal Music 3: The Finale was released in 2016. In 2015, he joined his record label crew on the compilation album The Indestructible Choc Boi Nation.
The new project is being sold as a playlist, a designation Abaga perhaps took from Canadian rapper Drake whose last project, 2017's More Life, was called a playlist and featured several artists. Rendezvous also features its own selection of guests. A number of Nigerian artists including Falz, Ajebutter 22, Tomi Thomas, Nonso Amadi and Terry Apala appear on the project. South African rap is represented by AKA and Cassper Nyovest. Social media personality Charles 'Igwe Tupac' Okocha also appears.
Although a new project, the earlier released single 'Your Father' finds a place among the project's 15 tracks.
Over the years, MI Abaga has announced several projects and failed to deliver them, so Rendezvous came as a surprise to fans of the rapper. Only last year, he held a concert ahead of a never-released project called the Love EP.
He has, however, set 18 May for the release of his eighth project, the much-awaited Yung Denzel. “Every project, for me is a piece of my life,” he said in a teaser for Yung Denzel. “I will never rush music because I respect my fan base too much.”
