SAMAs 2022 announce first batch of nominees

The amapiano hitmaker is nominated four times in the Record of the Year category for ‘Abalele’, ‘Asibe Happy’, ‘Banyana’ and ‘Izolo’, and once in the Music Video of the Year category for ‘Izolo’.

Following next with four nods is De Mthuda – twice for ‘Jola’ and ‘John Wick’ in the Record of the Year category and twice for the same tracks in the Music Video of the Year category.

Other artists who received multiple nominations include Mi Casa, Kabza De Small, Ami Faku and Boohle. The Record of the Year, Music Video of the Year and SAMPRA Artist of the Year are the only categories voted for exclusively by the public. The remaining nominees for adjudicated categories will be announced at an exclusive event in Johannesburg on 7 June.

“The calibre of nominees in the Record of the Year, Music Video of the Year and SAMPRA Artist of the Year categories this year are exciting in their diversity across genres,” Recording Industry of South Africa CEO Nhlanhla Sibisi said. “This cohort is a true reflection of ground breakers who have worked hard and adapted through a global pandemic to give us their best offerings. I encourage the fans to vote for their favourites while there is still time. We wish the nominees well and look forward to presenting these awards at the main event.”
