Spotify introduces pages for songwriters

The new feature, which is currently in beta version, will provide a new way for songwriters to share songs and get discovered by potential collaborators and fans.

The tool also lets listeners click on the songwriter’s name and a profile will then pop up.

The page will include a new Written By playlist with all of the songwriter’s songs, allowing listeners to stream them. It also features the songwriter’s most frequent collaborators as well as a link to social media pages or website.

The new feature aims to put more focus on songwriters, Spotify said. The music streaming platform started publicly displaying songwriting credits in 2018. Since then it says it’s seen a 60% increase in the number of times labels and distributors will credit songwriters.

“With the launch of Songwriter Pages we’re continuing to evolve how your music is discovered, appreciated and enjoyed by the world,” a Spotify blog post reads.

As part of the launch, Spotify will debut songwriter pages for Missy Elliott, Meghan Trainor, Fraser T Smith, Teddy Geiger, Ben Billions and Justin Tranter, among others.

In its current version, selection is done exclusively by Spotify and publishers in partnership with songwriters. However, interested songwriters can apply to join the programme by completing an online form.

To kick off Songwriter Pages, Spotify is featuring the first Written By playlists on the home tab for all Spotify listeners.

Songwriters’ information is usually available on physical albums and the latest move seems to be in line with the streaming service’s vision to give credit where it is due.
