Universal Music ‘to sign Liberia’s Stunna’

If the deal does happen, it will represent a major breakthrough for the Liberian music industry.

The global company's main rival is Temple Music, home to Nigeria's Iyana, who has worked with the Liberian artist in the past. But with Universal reportedly offering more than $1m for a six-year contract, the rivalry might be a myth.

“Negotiation is currently ongoing and so far, the Stunna management team has agreed on the terms of the deal but not advance payment of the $1.5 million," a source said.

“Right now, UMG is willing to pay half-a-million US dollars but the artist’s management team is demanding $600 000 or above since the deal includes his image rights, publishing and right to previously released songs. It is only the disagreement about an advance monetary payment that is dragging negotiations."

Stunna, 20, is regarded as Liberia's best young artist. He made his musical debut in 2016 with the 'WCW' collaborative single alongside rapper A-Raw and now has more than five hit singles to his name, including the popular 'Baby O' and 'Balance' (featuring Iyanya).

He is one of a few under-20 artists in Liberia to have had over three successful hits. While many agree he possesses a potential for success beyond his country, his management is keeping mum about the rumoured deal.

“Such a deal comes with immense benefits and it is something that we have been hoping for a long time," said Tmark Korpu, who is part of Stunna's team.

"It is an opportunity to boost his talent and image and increase his market value. However, I cannot answer your question whether such a deal is in the pipeline or not. What I can tell you is that something big is about to happen. Really big."
