US artist Aloe Blacc to perform at Blankets & Wine in Kenya
After a brief hiatus that led to the birth of Africa Nouveau Festival, Blankets & Wine will make a comeback on Sunday 10 April at Nairobi's Ngong Racecourse grounds. American artist Aloe Blacc is set to perform, along with Kenyan acts Just A Band, Mayonde and Muthoni the Drummer Queen.
In 2015, the monthly event gave way for a two-day festival, Africa Nouveau, whose inaugural edition ran for two days in September at the same venue. For fans it will be a wonderful opportunity to experience not only great music but also the comeback of an event that many Kenyan music fans always looked forward to.
Born Egbert Nathaniel Dawkins III in California to Panamanian parents, Aloe Blacc is well known for his mega-hits 'I Need a Dollar', 'The Man' and 'Wake Me Up'. He released his first album Shine Through in 2006, which brought forth a unique fusion of folk, salsa, dancehall and hip-hop The album featured the single 'I Need a Dollar', which reached the top 10 in several countries (including the UK and Germany) and was licensed as the theme song of the HBO show How to Make It in America. In 2013, Aloe co-wrote and fronted Avicii’s 'Wake Me Up', an international smash hit that reached the top five on Billboard’s Hot 100. His third album, Lift Your Spirit, was released in 2013.
Mayonde (aka Diana Nduba) is an eclectic singer songwriter based in Kenya. Her musical style can be described as sweet and soothing. She has toured Europe as part of the musical theatre show Out of Africa: The Magic of Kenya. In April 2013 Diana made her debut performance at Blankets & Wine.
Both Just A Band and Muthoni are not new on the Blankets and Wine stage, having performed there on various occasions. Just A Band have recently released a book documenting the bands musical journey.
