uThando: An exploration of love, hardship and African heritage
07 Dec 2023 - 12:49
South African dynamic duo Mavisto & MuTeo’s new six-track offering uThando is a captivating musical journey exploring love, hardship and African heritage. This EP embodies the duo’s distinctive sound and mission to carve a niche in the global dance scene through a diverse variety of tracks.
The EP’s opening self-titled track reflects the duo’s efforts to establish themselves in the dance scene. On this song, they do a good job with the lyrics, which evoke a nostalgic sense of lost love. The track, which was released as a single ahead of the EP, is interwoven with a delicate piano lines and subtle percussion rattles.
‘Buya Darly’, too, conveys poignant sentiments of heartbreak. These are artfully conveyed through soulful melodies and heartfelt lyrics, complemented by a top-quality Afro-house production.
However, the duo could have curated a better running order for this EP, as the second and third tracks bring about an abrupt tempo change that can be somewhat distracting; perhaps ‘Impumelelo’ and ‘Webaba’ should have been the last two tracks on this collection...
The above-mentioned two tracks deal head-on with life’s challenges, and will resonate with anyone who strives to succeed despite the many obstacles in their way. Throughout the two tracks, Mavisto & MuTeo inspire listeners to find strength within themselves and persevere.
It’s hard not to fall in love with ‘WeMhlaba’, a party-themed club banger produced alongside Sifiso Zwane and songwriters Nhlanzeko Dlamini and Sphamandla ‘Talent’ Mahlangu, while the last track on the EP, ‘African Anthem’, is a composition that emphasises the power of simple songwriting and the importance of a solid beat.
