Watch Asa's The Beginning
Before her upcoming appearance at Bassline Fest on 25 May, Nigerian artist Asa has released her first single in four years.
Titled 'The Beginning', the song comes after Asa shared almost 12 seconds of the song on social media.
That snippet was enough to create buzz for an artist who is frequently named among the best musical talents of her generation in Nigeria. From her eponymous debut album, Asa was greeted with a rare combination of critical consensus and commercial appeal.
Now based in Paris, Asa performs from time to time in her home country, each concert heralded by fanfare.
In a statement about the new song, the artist's team says the title has a "double meaning" even as it "announces the start of a new musical chapter for Asa."
"From the very start of the song, we remember all the reasons why we love the Nigerian songwriter: even with soft harmonies, the strength of emotions keep filtering through Asa’s voice. Her melodies fill the heart with words that can either comfort or 'hurt like a dagger'".
The song quickly climbed the trending list on Twitter, where the artist shared a link to its video with these words: "Here is to you, 'The Beginning', for me a reset, a rebirth. I hope you would love it as much as I do. Thank you all for your love and patience."
Although it is yet to be confirmed, the song appears to be the first single off a forthcoming album.
