Watch Die Antwoord's eerie Alien
South African hip hop duo Die Antwoord, which is no stranger to the abnormal and eerie, has released a video for ‘Alien’. The group announced the video through a teaser trailer last week that had fans waiting in anticipation. ‘Alien’ was directed by tattooed zef superstar and one-half of Die Antwoord, Ninja.
The video explores the othering of migrants in the US. The song, sang by Yolandi Visser, is an echo of that reality. She sings about being an alien in every environment and having difficulties fitting in.
The title is poignant because the term 'alien' if often used to describe immigrants who illegally enter the US, and who are often treated as unwanted. In California it was used as a term in the legal dictionary. It was removed due to its derogatory nature in 2015.
It's use is not only limited to the US. In South Africa immigrants are labelled aliens, or 'amakwerekwere', in informal settings. Violence has been a result of communities who are unhappy with foreigners living among them. In 2008, xenophobic attacks began in the township of Alexandra and spread countrywide leaving a death toll of more 55 people.
