Zim government appoints National Arts Council board

The appointment was made by the Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Anselem Sanyatwe. The board will run for four years until 30 November 2029, following a formal announcement by the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture.

According to the Ministry, the appointment was made in accordance with Section 11 of the Public Entities and Corporate Governance Act (Chapter 10:3) and Section 5(1) of the National Arts Council Act, a legislation that defines the legal framework for board composition and governance. The move is described as part of a broader effort to strengthen transparency and inclusive leadership within public entities, especially in the arts sector.

The newly appointed board comprises ten individuals with varied backgrounds and expertise. They are:

• Raphael Peter Mhone
• Richard Matambo
• Tariro Washe
• Gail Van Jaarsveldt
• Takawira Maswiswi
• Sibongile Ncube
• Lucia Mnkandla
• Farai Mpfunya
• Lawrence Mkwala

The board’s mandate includes guiding NACZ’s strategic direction, promoting and regulating the Creative and Cultural Industries (CCIs), supporting talent development from grassroots to professional levels, improving arts infrastructure, and securing sustainable funding for arts initiatives. The board is also charged with strengthening governance across arts and creative industry associations and promoting inclusivity across the sector.

The newly constituted board will be responsible for setting policies and overseeing NACZ’s activities aimed at supporting and regulating arts, culture and creative industries nationwide.
