Burna Boy, Tiwa Savage and Maleek Berry to play Afropunk Paris
Maleek Berry, Tiwa Savage and Burna Boy will perform on the Afropunk Paris stage on 13 and 14 July.
The festival stoked anticipation for this year's Paris edition yesterday when it announced successful ticket sales and added a short note about its line-up. “Our Paris Early Bird tickets have SOLD OUT! You can grab advanced tickets now at http://afropunkfest.com/paris . Stay tuned for the 2019 AFROPUNK Paris line-up coming tomorrow.”
Today, a list of names was tweeted by the festival, sparking excitement. Among the names announced were the trio of Nigerian artists. They will be joined by such acts as Janelle Monae and Ibeyi, among others.
Afropunk festival was inspired by a 2003 documentary of the same name capturing the contribution of black people to the otherwise white punk movement, but it has come to be expanded past its punk ethos. The first edition took place in the US in 2005 and has since spread to several cities around the world, with the increasingly popular Paris event getting its maiden edition three years ago.
Last year, Nigeria’s Wizkid and Nneka performed at the Paris event, as part of a line-up that included SZA, D'Angelo and Damian Marley. In the same year, South African acts Sho Madjozi, Manthe Ribane and Nakhane were featured at the Brooklyn edition of the event.
“Come to AFROPUNK Paris 2019 to feel the music, free your mind, and join the movement,” the organisers said. “Enjoy an incredible line-up of groundbreaking icons and emerging talents.”
Other cities will follow Paris after the French edition. They include London, Brooklyn, Atlanta and Johannesburg.
