Burna Boy, Sjava and Urban Village added to Afropunk Joburg line-up
Nigerian singer Burna Boy and South African artists Sjava and Urban Village have been added to the 2019 Afropunk Festival line-up.
The event, which will be headlined by US artists Solange Knowles and Miguel, will be held on Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg on 30 and 31 December.
South African elusive fusion outfit Kwani Experience and Kenya’s Blinky Bill were also announced on the line-up today. Previously announced artists include Busiswa, Distruction Boyz, Sho Madjozi, Zoë Modiga, Morena Leraba, Darkie Fiction, TCIYF, Umlilo, DBN Gogo, Gina Jeanz, Lelowhatsgood and Fif_Laaa.
“When you thought the Afropunk Joburg line-up couldn't get any better, we are bringing Burna Boy, Sjava, Kwani Experience, Urban Village, Blinky Bill, and more with us to Con Hill,” Afropunk wrote on Facebook.
Urban Village also wrote: “The village has spoken.”
With Burna Boy on the line-up, the Afropunk Festival promises fireworks this year. The 'Anybody' singer is now among the top African artists making waves with contemporary African music around the world. And festivalgoers can look forward to live renditions of songs off his highly successful African Giant album.
Meanwhile, BET Award winner Sjava will entertain fans with ‘Ekuseni’ and songs from his albums Isina Muva, African Sexy and Umqhele (The Birth of Popra Music).
Urban Village and Kwani Experience will add the South African township flavour to the event. Comprising Lerato Lichaba (guitar and vocals), Tubatsi Moloi (flute and lead vocals), Xolani Mtshali (drum and vocals), Simangaliso Dlamini (bass) and Mojalefa Mofokeng (percussions and vocals), Urban Village are known for exhibiting high levels of energy. The group, together with Kwani Experience, will be performing at Afropunk Festival for the first time.
Tickets to the event are available here.
