Music education in Africa to take centre stage at ACCES 2018

The discussion – titled Music Education in Africa & Africa in Music Education – will provide insight into the state of music education on the continent, as well as the opportunities, challenges and best practices associated with this sector.

“This kind of panel is essential for a music conference like ACCES," Music In Africa Foundation director Eddie Hatitye said. "It will help many upcoming musicians realise the importance of music education and give current and future academics food for thought about what needs to change in order to make this sector viable for Africa's young music professionals."

The panel will be moderated by Kenya Music Conservatoire director Wandiri Karimi and feature Sauti Academy founder Natalie Lukkenaer (Kenya), Dr Benon Kigozi from Makerere University (Uganda), Dr Evelyne Mushira from the music and dance department at Kenyatta University (Kenya) and Zukunftslabor's Annette Rüggeberg (Germany), who will discuss the importance of Afrocentric music syllabi at educational institutions across the continent.

The panellists will also aim to highlight local and international music education initiatives available to Africans and evaluate the impact of African music on the global curriculum.

The session will begin at 11.05am on Saturday 17 November 2018 at the Kenya National Theatre in Nairobi and will give audience members an opportunity to engage with the panellists on various issues pertaining to music education in the East African region and beyond.
