Tems bags nomination for 2023 Golden Globes Awards

Slated for 11 January in California, US, the scheme, which is now in its 80th year, celebrates excellence in American and international film and television.

The song, which Tems co-wrote with composer Ludwig Göransson, Rihanna and filmmaker Ryan Coogler, is the lead single off the 19-track project. It pays tribute to Chadwick Boseman, who played the role of T’Challa in Black Panther (2018), before losing a battle with colon cancer in 2020.

“Congratulations to Tems, Rihanna, Ryan Coogler and Ludwig Göransson for their Golden Globe Nomination for Best Original Song,” Black Panther producers Marvel Studios posted on Twitter in response to the news.

“After speaking with Ryan and hearing his direction for the film and the song, I wanted to write something that portrays a warm embrace from all the people that I’ve lost in my life,” Tems said of the vision behind the record. “I tried to imagine what it would feel like if I could sing to them now and express how much I miss them. Rihanna has been an inspiration to me, so hearing her convey this song is a great honour.”

Tems shot to global fame after featuring on Wizkid’s chart-topping 2020 single ‘Essence’.

Boasting more than 1 billion streams on Spotify across all credits, Tems has two EPs  – For Broken Ears and If Orange Was a Place  –  as well as a plethora of runaway hits like ‘Crazy Tings’, ‘Damages’ and ‘Free Mind’. In recent years, she has also collaborated with global pop icons including Beyoncé, Drake and Future, among others.

This year alone, Tems has received notable accolades such as a Soul Train Award, two BET Awards, and a BMI Impact Award for her contributions to music through her “ground-breaking artistry, creative vision and impact on the future of music.”
