BIO

Sakira Issoufo M’dziani known as Chakires Issoufo was born in Diego Suarez (Madagascar) to Comorian parents. A self-taught musician, he began his career at a young age in the mid-1980s in Moroni (Comoros), where he grew up. He made his stage debut in 1987 as part of a music association. In 1994, he moved to Mayotte to pursue his musical career; there, he met various musicians and founded the acoustic group "Chakires et Oulanga." He recorded his debut album, AL-Camar, in 1999.

His career took another leap forward back in Moroni. In 2003, he participated in a pre-selection audition for an Indian Ocean festival in Mauritius, winning the "Jeune Découverte" (Young Discovery) award. Upon returning to Moroni, he recorded a second album, Baswar (2004), followed by a third, Comment tu vois (2006). A decade later, with six albums released under the stage name Chakires, he has established himself with a repertoire that while rooted in tradition is infused with the modernity born of musical collaborations and time spent across the Indian Ocean islands. This has given him a vibrant, diverse identity that has captivated renowned artists such as Jean-Jacques Goldman and Mory Kanté, for whom he has served as an opening act. Having chosen to settle in Réunion five years ago, this singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist has found the ideal setting to advance his career in the music world.

His aim is to create a musical kaleidoscope of the Indian Ocean; a hub of multicultural encounters by incorporating elements from the various civilizations that nourish and influence him. He uses this foundation to innovate and modernize this heritage within a melting pot he calls "traditional world." A creative take on the musical cultures of my islands, alongside musicians from diverse backgrounds bringing their techniques, knowledge, and talents a wealth of elements that colour my music.
