Jodi Fredericks

BIO

Jodi Fredericks is a singer, performing artist, songwriter, session vocalist and model from South Africa.

Fredericks is no stranger to several of South Africa's most renowned stages. Being active in the industry for 11 years, she has performed at festivals such as the Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF) several times, Jazz on the Rocks, and the annual Cape Town Jazzathon. In 2019, Jodi graduated from the South African College of Music, University of Cape Town with a BMus Honours in Jazz Performance, was crowned the winner of the Grand West and Heart 104.9 Open Mic Jazz Competition, and was selected as one of 6 semi-finalists in the country to compete in the SAMRO Overseas Scholarship Competition where she was awarded the merit award. As follow-up to her performance at the SAMRO Overseas Scholarship Competition, in June of 2022, Jodi was invited to perform at the "World Jazz Festival" in Mumbai, India where she was hosted by Banyan Tree. This was an incredibly enriching experience as she collaborated with musicians from around Europe such as Alexander Beets, Ellister van der Molen, Marius Beets, Miguel Rodriguez and Ben van den Dungen and also had the opportunity to perform her original music for the first time outside of South Africa. This collaboration was facilitated and supported by Andre Le Roux and his company, Concerts SA.

Jodi was invited to appear and perform on Kyknet & Kie's Tussen Ons with Tracey Lange in 2020 and was later invited back to perform and speak on her collaboration "Better Off (Without You)" with South African production and songwriting duo 'Do Not Disturb'. The song has been in rotation at several radio stations across the country since its release. Prior to this release, Jodi was invited for several radio interviews since she's been in the industry including Heart FM, Goodhope FM and KFM. The song has also been supported by Apple Music, which selected and internationally playlisted it from the onset of its release. She has also appeared on television shows like Hectic Nine9 and more recently has been invited to the SABC 3 Expresso Morning show as well as the Afternoon Express on multiple occasions.

In 2021, Jodi was commissioned to write and record for the MNET Original movie "Late Bloomer" which premiered on MNET on the 12th of February 2022. The movie is now available on Showmax and can be streamed worldwide at any given time. The track "More", as well as the rest of the released soundtrack is now available on all streaming platforms worldwide and has also been playlisted on Apple Music. This track was in collaboration with the 2017 Standard Bank Young Artist Award recipient, bassist, arranger, composer, and producer, Benjamin Jephta.

Jodi features on the debut album, Bait For Steps Forward, of South African pianist, violinist, composer, arranger and producer Nobuhle Ashanti, due to be released in 2022 along with a documentary of the making of the album.

The year 2022 has been quite a travel year for Jodi as she did not only travel to Mumbai but also was selected as one of 9 South African industry workers by the Artscape Theatre, to represent South Africa on a 4 legged collaborative cultural exchange which started at Samba Resille in Toulouse, France in June 2022. The second leg of this program will be in February 2023 in Brussels, Belgium. The third leg of this initiative will take place in Sweden, hosted by a Samba group called Abunda and the final leg will be hosted in Cape Town South Africa by the Artscape Theatre.

Jodi was invited to perform at the "World Jazz Festival" in Amersfoort which took place from the 9th to the 14th of August 2022. This performance was endorsed by Banyan Tree, India.

With all the highs 2022 has presented Jodi with, she cites her acceptance to the world-renowned Berklee University (New York) for her Masters in Songwriting and Production as the highlight of her year. Pending funding (check out how you can get involved via backabuddy.co.za), she will relocate to New York for a year in September 2023 in pursuit of her Masters Degree. Jodi Fredericks is a name you want to look out for as she embarks on the ventures of her incredibly promising career.
