Spotify announces top artists and songs from Nigeria

The Afro-fusion star and Grammy winner also boasts the top song and album on Spotify Nigeria in 2022 with ‘Last Last’ and Love Damini, respectively.

These feats, coupled with impressive numbers in neighbouring Ghana, where emerged as the most streamed artist in the country this year, catapulted Burna Boy to the status of the most globally streamed artist from sub-Saharan Africa.

Spotify RADAR alumnus, Ayra Starr is the most streamed female artist in Nigeria, while Tems ranked highest among Nigeria’s musical exports in 2022. ‘Wait For You’, the singer’s collaboration with Future and Drake, was the top Nigerian song export of the year.

Spotify’s artist and label partnerships manager for West Africa, Victor Okpala, said: “2022 ushered us into an era of cultural overdrive and we’re excited for fans and artists alike to share these insights on the music they created and listened to this year.”

Meanwhile, a key highlight from Spotify’s report is that Nigerians listened to nearly three times as much local music in 2022 than they did in 2021 with a 291% year-on-year increase in local music consumption.

The above data corroborates the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry’s (IFPI’s) Engaging with Music 2022 report, whose data suggests that Nigerian music fans are listening to more music than any other country globally, with Nigerian pop, Nigerian hip hop/rap, Afrobeat and Afrobeats ranking among the top 10 genres globally.
